.............................NEWS ROUND UP 2007

  • Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate Practicals; At the end of April, 44 Junior Certificate and 23 Leaving Certificate music students had their practical assessments.  Over three days, the two visiting examiners heard performances of over 350 solo or group items. These will count to up to 33% (JC) or 50% (LC) of the students’ final marks and represent a significant proportion of the work of the music department.

The Dawn Chorale: On 3rd May Ms Mahoney led the Chamber Choir to the terrace of the rose garden at Kilkenny Castle at 6.15 a.m. to perform at another ‘Dawn Chorale’ before about 150 early risers.  Along with the birds, they sang: “Morning has broken”, “Holy, Holy, Holy”, “Ave verum” and “Now is the month of Maying”.  Breakfast in the Kilkenny Design Centre followed.

Opening Service of the Synod: History was made on Tuesday 8th May when the opening service of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland was held in St Canice’s Cathedral.  The Chamber Choir were honoured to be invited to sing at this occasion and provided the music during the Communion of the people. A very large congregation of clergy and laity from the whole of Ireland heard them sing “This joyful Eastertide”, “Ave verum”, “The Lord bless you”, “Day by day”, “The souls of the righteous” and “Ave maris stella”. This was the first time the newly-renovated organ was heard. Eleven of the 46 speaking stops were in action.

Visit by Camerata Ireland: The renowned chamber orchestra of hand-picked young professionals, directed by the world famous pianist/conductor Barry Douglas, were in Kilkenny to give two concerts during May.  As part of their visit, three residencies were held in Kilkenny College when three of the musicians held a workshop for our 3rd year music pupils.  Barry Douglas and two of his leading players generously gave an informal recital in the music room in front of 35 of our music pupils.  It was a special treat to hear our lovely grand piano being played by Barry and to hear a genuine Stadivarius violin (worth $2.5m) at such close quarters.  They performed the 1st movt. of Tchaikovsky’s Piano trio, a set of variations for violin and ‘cello and a slow, bluesy movement a contemporary American composer.

Moladh an Cheoil: The Kilkenny College Music Department received a commendation in the national competition for second level schools’ music in the RTÉ Lyricfm/Danfay Irl competition. The music department offered a concert as part of the presentation to incoming pupils and their parents and families on 21st May for Open Day.  At the 4th Year Awards the programme included items from the music class, who performed the “Geographical Fugue” by Ernst Toch.
