The Parade of Teams with KCK destined to become champions
Having won the Leinster Schools the College headed to the massive complex of Gormanstown College to a hall with 16 courts which all were in full action from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Schools travelled from the four corners of the country to compete for honours in the pinnacle event of the schools badminton calendar.
First match for Kilkenny College was against Bandon Grammar School representing Munster. This game was played with fierce intensity as with games being played 1st to 30pts KCK managed to win all 4 singles and the doubles but three games were won 30-28 and the rest all in the high 20s.
This was a wonderful start and the momentum hopefully would carry to Ulster Champions Coleraine but they had beaten Connacht 4-2 in their first match. Their top players just had the edge and this time it was KCK’s turn to lose by the 30-28 score-line. The College had a very well balanced team and this is where it's vital as they pulled off the matches and took the College to a draw winning the last doubles 30-28. As that battle was on with Coleraine, Bandon beat the team from Mayo 4-2 .
So it was all to play for in the last round. Mayo had two hot shots at the top but a weaker end to the team so with nerves jangling the College headed for the Champion spot. Roy Connor pulled off an amazing win in his singles by the narrowest of margins 30-29 to set the team on their way. 2nd singles went to Mayo but Kilkenny’s Trevor Watchorn and Daryl James used all their experience to win their singles. With Bandon having a very close battle with Coleraine on the court alongside, all with close score-lines, all eyes were on both courts.
The 1st doubles of Leon and Roy lost out 28-30 in another thriller. Victory was sealed when Trevor and Daryl won the last doubles and, with Bandon defeating Ulster, they moved to runner-up spot and Kilkenny were crowned Champions.
The President of the Leinster Branch presented the Medals and trophies to all the winners.
Many thanks to the Parents’ Association who bought the gear for the team and how smart they looked in the parade of teams which took place prior to the event. Also thanks to sub Robert Bennett who thought when Roy hurt his ankle he may have to take to the floor but thankfully Roy battled on. Robert umpired all KCK’s share of matches and kept his cool calm composure with the tense games being played in front of him. Also, thanks to all the families who supported the team by travelling up.
The squad and families all enjoyed a celebration meal following a very long day, thanks to Mr Coe for organising it. Valerie James on behalf of the parents congratulated the squad, coach and the wonderful achievement of the lads. Captain Leon Coe thanked the team for the wonderful way they held on to win, the supporters and not forgetting Tom the driver of the school bus. Heather Sharman the coach said it was one of her proudest moments in her badminton career to see the occasion that a College team won an All-Ireland title. The lads were brilliant on the day and a credit to the school and the clubs of Y.M., Carlow, Portarlingon and Johnstown who had all started the boys out on their badminton journey with great club coaching.
