The results of the Leaving Certificate were received on 18th August and last year’s students will celebrate their “coming out” at the annual “Debs Ball held in the Mt Wolselely Hotel on 24th August. We wish the Class of 2010 all the best in their future endeavours hope they will maintain their links with Kilkenny College in the years to come on visits to the College, at matches and Past Pupils’ events.
As we welcome back all pupils for the forthcoming academic year, best wishes especially to those joining the College for the first time hoping their time with us will be a happy and fruitful one.
SPORT NEWS:
Athletics:
Our pupils have remained active in a great variety of sports over the summer holiday. News of some very fine achievements has reached us. In Athletics Nessa Cooper Millet won a silver medal for the long jump, bronze in the 300m and 4th place in the triple jump at Intermediate level in the National Track and Field (Club) finals. Sophie Parkinson Brown represented Ireland in the Schools’ Home International Competition between Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales winning a bronze medal in the Discus. At the National Track and Field Finals she won gold medals in both the Shot Putt and Discus. Sophie followed that double Irish championship win with a bronze medal in the Junior Women’s Discs. At the same event Louise Holmes (Form 5) became 100m Champion and her brother Jonathan, a past pupil, became senior men’s 100m champion. He was awarded the Paddy Larkin Memorial Trophy. To round off a wonderful occasion Louise also took third place in the 200m final and was 4th in the Junior Women’s 100m final.
Hockey:
At international schools’ level Jeremy Duncan was capped in all of Ireland’s games at U16 level in Barcelona in July. He played really well scoring in the defeat to Belgium in a pre-tournament friendly and in the 3-3 draw with Russia. The Irish U16s also drew 1-1 with Austria and 2-2 with Poland, had a 3-0 win over the Czech boys, but lost 3-1 to Holland, the eventual tournament winners. The team finished 6th and remain in the top division. We wish Jeremy well as he prepares for his seventh cap against the UK Lions on 21st August.
The Equestrian Club
The Equestrian Club is looking forward to a busy year ahead, following much fun and success particularly in the All Ireland Hunter Trials where we won our 7th team championship in the past 11 years. The White Cup will take place in Warrington in late September and students who wish to enter Showjumping competitions should sign up with Mr. Cuddihy. We had two teams of three riders at Hickstead last week. Luck ran out for our team of Kara and Jordan Cummins and Eoghan Murphy with the sound of falling poles. Nonetheless our team of Jeremy Cairns, Stephen Heffernan and Tess Stokes gained a creditable 8th place from the starting 65 teams at this international event. We thank those who are now moving on to greater things and welcome our new members.
