EAMON’S ACCURATE AIM  STRIKES

The senior boys’ hockey team won the first cup for the College since 2000 when they overcame the High School in dramatic form yesterday.

Playing in the inaugural Trophy Final were Kilkenny College and the High School, both of whom had come through their respective sides of the knock-out competition to meet in this final before going on into the semi-final of the traditional cup.  The College had ovecome John Scottus and St Columba’s to reach this point.

The game opened evenly for the first half with perhaps Kilkenny having the better of thetrophy 3 exchanges.  However the the stout Dublin defence by Glenanne’s Shane O’Donohoe and the High School’s skipper goalkeeper Gareth Carragher  were equal to the constant probes by Eamon Walshe, Jeremy Duncan, Ben Jacob and the buzzing Evan Matthews.  O’Donoghue constantly hoisted the ball safely out of his defence to give the Dublin side the break up front.

However it was the Kilkenny side who broke the deadlock as they got the dream start after the break when Walshe put the ball in the net on the reverse.  Despite constant pressure from Kilkenny, the High School replied when Rathgar’s Irish under 18 International made it 1-1 and 10 minutes from the end “Maddy” Moore struck home with a cracking volley for the provincials to make it look as if it was all over.  But the High School were writing the script at that point and deep in the last few seconds secured a penalty corner which O’Donoghue loftily converted.

trophy 4 Extra time proved no division between the two sides and, as many predicted, it came down to the dreaded strokes. Not even the gallant skipper keeper George Smyth stepping out of his goal to take one of the strokes could help – and then he had to step back in again and face the next barrage.  Here again there was little to separate the takers as they succeeded and missed and eventually after deadlock at 3-3 brought the game down to the terminal wire and sudden death.

It took two more rounds to achieve result and as the High School failed to convert with Smyth launching low to save, it was Eamon Walshe who sent the ball home to bring the trophy to Kilkenny for the very first time ever and the first major win for the premier team for over a decade.

Minors bow out on strokes.

The under 14 boys’ went out to Newpark on strokes on a wet Wednesday afternoon yesterday in the Leinster Cup Competition.  The College started brightly and David McClure put the team 1-0 ahead after 20 minutes with a strong strike from the top of the circle.  The two teams were evenly matched and played the long ball as the match swung from end to end.  The College had the better of the circle exchanges but stout goalkeeping from Newpark kept the visitors at bay.

Finally, with 10 minutes to go Newpark equalised from open play with a goal from the busy mid-fielder Andrew Ramsey.  Extra time still did not decide the issue and so strokes loomed ominously.  Despite the College going 1-0 up, Newpark quickly equalised and went on to score all their flicks while their keeper again thwarted the efforts of Kilkenny.  So as the rain set in, it was back on the bus with no cup final to look forward to – until next year!

Although support on the sideline was its traditional sparse- there was a reunion of hockey aficionados.  Umpires were Richard Willis and Peter Murphy.  Coach for Kilkenny was Alec Barrett; coaches for Newpark were Karl Bredin and Peter Agnew.  Also in attendance were Mark Cookman Vice-Principal Newpark and Herbie Sharman.

The senior boys' hockey team overcame a dogged John Scottus in the first section of the Leinster Schools' boys' Cup on 3rd February at the grounds of Pembroke Wanderers.

The College started brightly, leading the attack, but could not penetrate the Dublin school's defence.  it was not until 2 minutes from half time that the College plundered a goal when Eddie Healy who had just come on at left mid, put the ball in the Scottus net giving KCK a lift going into the second half.

After the break the sides looked more even with John Scottus fighting hard for parity.  KCK goalkeeper George Smyth was called on several times to defend his refuge.  However, as the match drew to its finality, the College gradually wore down the Dublin defence and following one of several penalty corners, Jeremy Duncan 'reverse sticked' the ball into the goal.  Just before full time Eamon Walsh made it 3 and with that, the win was complete and it was into the semi-final.

This will be against St Columba's.  In a new arrangement this year, this first section, called the Trophy, will produce a winner which will then play into the competition proper where Wesley and St Andrew's are ceded.

Squad:  Evan Mathews, Howard McDonnell, George Smyth (Gk), Patrick Smeele, Johnny Atkinson, Colin Harper, Matthew Moore, Brendan Dowling, Eoin Finnegan, Chris Dick, Ben Jacob, Graham Dowling, Eddie Healy, Jeremy Duncan, Eamonn Walsh.  Coach: Brian Gray.  Referees:  Lee Chadwick, Graham Dowling.
